What is Umrah?

Umrah is a sacred pilgrimage to Makkah that Muslims can perform at any time of the year. It is a Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and holds immense spiritual value. While it is not mandatory like Hajj, performing Umrah brings countless blessings and forgiveness from Allah (SWT).

Step-by-Step Umrah Guide

1. Niyyah (Intention) and Ihram

Before crossing the Miqat (boundary), make the intention for Umrah. Wear Ihram — two white unstitched cloths for men; simple dress for women. Offer two rakats Salah and recite Talbiyah:

2. Entering Masjid Al-Haram

Enter with the right foot, reciting the appropriate dua. Keep your eyes on the Holy Kaaba, raise hands in dua, and express your deepest prayers.

3. Tawaf (Circling the Kaaba)

Perform 7 rounds (Shawt) around the Kaaba in an anti-clockwise direction. Start at Hajar-e-Aswad (Black Stone) — kiss it, touch it, or point towards it if crowded. Recite duas, dhikr, or personal prayers during each round.

4. Salah at Maqam Ibrahim

After completing Tawaf, offer 2 rakats of Salah behind Maqam Ibrahim, if possible.

5. Zamzam Water

Drink Zamzam water — a blessed water with healing properties. Make dua while drinking: “O Allah, grant me beneficial knowledge, vast sustenance, and healing from every disease.”

6. Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah

Walk between Safa and Marwah hills, completing 7 rounds (Safa to Marwah is one). Begin at Safa, face the Kaaba, and make dua. Walk briskly between the green lights (men only). End at Marwah with dua..

7. Halq or Taqsir (Shaving or Trimming Hair)

Men: Shave (Halq) or shorten hair (Taqsir — minimum 1 inch). Women: Cut a small portion (about one inch) from the end of their hair. This marks the completion of Umrah and release from Ihram.

Be patient and kind; Umrah is a spiritual journey. Keep yourself hydrated, especially during peak seasons. Learn basic duas and etiquettes of Makkah and Madinah. Respect the sanctity of both the Haramain (Makkah & Madinah). Keep your belongings safe.
